Abstract

This documentary research project, entitled Documentary research on child abuse and its impact on school performance in early childhood education (2016–2025), aims to analyze and systematize the contributions of research related to child abuse and its influence on the school performance of children in early childhood education, based on studies conducted between 2016 and 2025. The methodology adopted is based on a qualitative approach, in the form of documentary research, through the review and analysis of theses and scientific articles obtained from national virtual institutional repositories, selected for their relevance and methodological rigor. The study is organized into two areas of analysis. The first axis addresses the dimensions, indicators, and instruments used to measure child abuse, showing that the research mainly coincides in the dimensions of physical abuse, psychological abuse, and neglect, operationalized through indicators such as beatings, corporal punishment, shouting, humiliation, threats, and neglect of basic needs. It also identifies that the structured questionnaire is the most widely used instrument, supplemented in some studies with observation guides and interviews. The second axis focuses on common findings and gaps in research, highlighting a high prevalence of child maltreatment, with a predominance of psychological abuse and neglect, as well as a significant negative relationship with school performance and socio-emotional development. However, gaps are identified, such as the predominant use of non-experimental and cross-sectional designs, small samples, and the limited implementation of intervention and prevention studies. It is concluded that child maltreatment is a relevant risk factor for school performance in early childhood education, and that it is necessary to strengthen longitudinal research and preventive programs in the educational and family spheres.
